Weird. I don't remember asking to sleep in someone's house... did I pass out, Navi? I should thank whoever--

Navi? What the... everything's gone! Even my clothes? You've gotta be kidding me! How did some bandit even make off with... not good. Not good.

[A confused newcomer is now snooping around his house. At some point he will casually hop out a first-story window to see if anyone's hiding outside, but instead find himself wondering where the hell he is.]

[Well Link, you're in for a TREAT! There's some little guy sitting on the lawn with a pile of tools, wood, screws and the like, building away at... something. Close by, a large dodo bird trundles about the yard. It spots you before he does, and squawks a greeting at you. The guy turns around.]

Oh! Who're you?
[Well that's a weird bird, but he's seen weird birds before. He might ask about it later.]

Uh, I'm Link. Do you know where we are?
We're in Mayfield! Are you new? Did you wake up in this house?! [He stands up and turns around now. He looks sort of excited about this. NEW HOUSEMATE?!]
[BACKING AWAY SLIGHTLY]

Well, yeah. I'm pretty sure I got robbed, though, so have you seen anyone supicious go past carrying a lot of stuff? Especially a sword and a fairy?
Oh, someone took your stuff. Someone took all of our stuff! Even intangible things. It's not very fair, but that's what this town does. Kidnaps you, takes your stuff, and now you live with us! I'm Cynric, by the way.

Do you really have a fairy?
The town did? You mean everyone here, or just the leaders?

...And yeah, her name's Navi.
I suppose whomever's in charge of this town, but we don't know who that is. Well maybe. That's a long story. But they give you things back every once in awhile. Like Hephaestus here! [He points to the dodo.]

Oh yes. And the post office returned my clothes, but they took my fingers. [He holds up his right hand now, which is still bandaged.] So I don't recommend that.
[One second, brain catching up.]
So they kidnap people and cut their fingers off? Is anybody doing anything about it?

There are no bandits here. Calm down.
I'm calm. Apparently it's something worse than bandits, though.
Magic. Or something. It doesn't matter.
I'd say it matters a lot right now. We're gonna have to fight it.
If you're trying to say you're not getting involved, that's fine.
Just don't do anything to make the rest of us suffer.
...Would they do that?

[Zevran is used to the movements of the drones and Cynric by now - they've been unchanged as a family since he's arrived - so when he hears unusual activity in the house while he knows Cynric is hanging out in the front yard with Hephestus, he goes to investigate. Rather cautiously. With a hand on his blades.] What do we have here?
Uh, just a-- do you live here? I was just leaving. I woke up here for some reason.
Really? [Zevran cocks his head, relaxing a bit and taking his hand off the grip of his blade. If nothing else, someone who's just arrived in Mayfield won't have any weapons on them yet, so it's a minimal threat.] I would assume you have been assigned to live here, then. The same thing happened to me some time ago.
...Assigned?
One of the many baffling eccentricities of this town. People are spirited away from their homes - which may be any number of different worlds - and wake up in one of these houses with a number of strangers that the town claims is their 'family'. I believe you are punished with brainwashing if you stay away from your assigned house for too long. Some of the family members are permanently brainwashed, one way or another, but some are prisoners like us.

There is a boy named Cynric here that has been assigned as my son; I suppose you have taken the place of the other, brainwashed child that lived here.
...That's the most confusing thing I've ever heard. What's the point of all that?
I haven't the slightest idea. [Zevran laughs. He's more or less adapted to Mayfield's arbitrary insanity by now.] I expect someone finds it amusing. You do have my sympathy; we are in the same boat, after all. But there is little to be done for the moment - or at least little to be done that stands a chance of working.
There has to be something. What have people tried?
